old school guitar sounds??

ok so i have a Peavey fender imitation, with the volume knob and 2 tone knobs and a pick up switch. Its hooked up to a simple silvertone amp, roughly 1′x1′x8” and the only controls it has is the overdrive then the over drive on and off switch with a volume, treble and bass knob. I’m looking for a vintage 1950′s sound early rock like rockabilly sound any ideas on how to hook it up so it will sound right.

James, I don’t know about your Peavey faux telly, but if you just google ‘rockabilly guitar you’ll bring up several sites with axes (like Gretch), amps, and instruction book/DVD combos that look very useful. The basic rockabilly sound is a semi-acoustic slap with a ton of reverb. You might even use an accoustic guitar with a pickup for that sound. Another low-cost item I use are Ernie Ball ‘NotEvenSlinky’ strings, which is the hheaviestgage they make. Mashing those babies down on the frets will make a man of you in no time.
Speaking of Peavey, I was at Guitar Center and I played one of their amps with a grouping of ppresetsounds and I was really impressed with the Rockabilly setting…It was the real thing at the touch of a button. Have you taken your rig into the bathroom and run half-a-tub of water? Now there’s some real echo!
Good luck and keep ahold of that Silvertone.
Bruce
