Studying music late?

I have always loved music, opera, Spanish and world music. I am now 37, married and have a little daughter of 2 years and a half, and I am considering the possibility of giving singing a chance by studying on later be able to join a group for entertainment music or something like that. People value my singing greatly (soprano voice) and I have sang in a church choir for almost 5 years until 2002. I also learned to play guitar, keyboard and some flute by myself. Do you think I might have a chance to get something out of music now and explote my talents, being 37 and moreover, having a little child? Anyone have an idea where I can begin? I live in Holland, but I am a southamerican woman.

Absolutely!! Maybe you haven’t “studied” singing, but you already have a great amount of music in you—and that is far more important.

Music does wonderful things for your heart and mind. When you focus on music, your brain develops new, special pathways. (Have you ever noticed how musical people are usually smarter than average?) It’s a special way to express your emotions. It stimulates your creativity and your compassion. There is no reason _not_ to learn more about music. If everyone did, we would have a much better world.

I haven’t heard you sing, so I don’t know how you use your voice or how much you understand about how your voice works. But as a singer, there are certain basic techniques that may help you sing in a more natural, effective way, and enjoy singing more. So a few lessons with a good voice teacher may bring you some benefits.

And whatever you do, remember to enjoy yourself! That’s the main point. It should never feel like a task. Techniques are just tools; ultimately, music is about love and emotion. (I teach kids to play the piano. Most of them are preoccupied with technique and accuracy. That’s okay, to start—but I try to show them that they must eventually stop thinking about technique, and just play. Otherwise, music is just a mechanical exercise. Eventually you must stop following the numbered footprints, and allow yourself to dance.)

With your family, you obviously have other obligations in your life. But you deserve to find a way to give yourself some special music time. If you do, you will bring many benefits back to your family—you’ll be happier, you’ll think better, you’ll be more excited about life. It’s good for everybody.

I hope you find your musical path. There are so many ways to do it, and only you know where your heart will lead you.
