Why do I get this horrible screeching noise when I record with Garageband?

So my plan was to record my guitar playing into the built-in mic on my macbook pro using Garageband, but as soon as I turned “monitor on”, it began this horrible, high-pitched screeching noise. I moved my guitar and mini-amp away from the computer, but it didn’t help. I put the noise gate effect all the way up, which helped, but that will result in quality loss when I record.

Any ideas of how I can fix this? Have you had this problem?

Feedback.

Either that, or you’re a really terrible musician. :P

I’m not familiar with Garage band or audio production on Macs, but the concepts are the same. Muting the Mac speakers or plugging the guitar directly into the microphone jack should alleviate the issue.
