What kind of Ukulele should i get?

I have been wanting to get a Ukulele for some time now…but when someone mentioned the other day how they know someone got one for like 20 bucks that blew my mind.

A quick amazon searched revealed a decent looking one for 60 dollars (http://www.amazon.com/Washburn-OU2-Oscar-Schmidt-Ukulele/dp/B0002GLMEK). I’m not sure if this is the wisest decision though to buy from amazon.

To give you some idea, I grew up playing violin and have played guitar for quite some time now. So I have a certain amount of musical ability.

What would be a decent ukulele to buy with sound quality that will hold up as I improve, yet is reasonably priced for someone who wont make it their main instrument?

If you are familiar with guitars, to give you an idea my first guitar was a Martin DCX-1E which cost me about 625 (list 999) and it was the perfect mix of quality without the higher end price in the thousands. (hopefully a uke for me wont be near that price at all!)

Thanks!

Tim P,
Since you play a guitar I’ll tell you the largest of the ukulele family is a baritone ukulele and tuned to the first four strings of a guitar. So, you wouldn’t have to learn any new chords….you already know how to play it. BUT, it doesn’t give the sound of a ukulele. It gives the sound of a guitar without the two lower (E&A) strings.
Because you play a guitar I’d suggest you go with a tenor ukulele b/c the frets are wider. A good one to start with is a Lanikai LU-21T. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation?q=ukulele&st= A really nice sounding ukulele for a great price. There are others that are more expensive but you’ll be amazed at the sound and volume this one produces.
Here’s an online tuner, lessons, songs, and other interesting ukulele info.

Also, see http://curtsheller.com/ukuleleClubs.shtml and http://www.fleamarketmusic.com/directory/default.asp for folks that play the ukulele near you. Hook up with them because it’s great playing with others.
Have fun and let me know how you’re doing,
