Quit my weekly guitar lessons… what now?

Well for the last 9 months I have been having weekly guitar lessons at my local music studio. The thing is… my teacher said my exams were coming up and I didn’t want exams! I just wanted to learn to play. Grading just seems a pointless chore for me, and I wasn’t getting anywhere it was just practicing from my grade book.

But I want to carry on with guitar, i’m determined. I want to get better and better by myself.

Is it possible to be a good self taught guitarist? Because some of the greats like Jimi Hendrix made it.

What now?

Exams are always a turn-off for many people–me included. I have a certain criteria that I follow when teaching my students, but I never give an end-of-month exam. Any performance skills are done during the lesson when I need to see how the student is learning and applying the skills I pass on.

For example, I will teach music theory which is very basic and then have the student play the short exercises. That is examination enough. If they can play an exercise in front of me that would be sufficient.

Get an instructor that follows not only his own criteria, but what would be beneficial for you.

Yes, you could now continue and learn on your own–provided you recognize what is important. Music theory–playing notation for the guitar–is crucial, so get started on that. Focus on chords and their progressions, and learn what the Chromatic Scale is in chords and in notation.
