How should I get in the habit of using downstrokes instead of upstrokes?
My guitar book says that I should be using downstrokes at this stage (I’ve only been learning for a week), but I find myself using upstrokes almost all the time. Unless I consciously tell myself before a practice song to use downstrokes, I ALWAYS end up using upstrokes. What should I do?
By the way, I’m only at the first and second string, so far. ( the bottom two strings) so far.
No, I’m right handed.
If you’re only playing the 1st and 2nd strings it’s probably gonna feel more natural for you to pick them on the upstroke because you don’t have to worry about skipping over all of the other strings.
If you’ve only been learning for a week then it’s nothing to worry about at all. Learning how to play guitar takes time and patience. You’ll probably find that when you’re playing open chords or more things on the bottom strings that It’s easier to pick on the downstroke.
Just be patient and continue doing what you’re doing. Maybe find some simple alternate picking and strumming excersises and practice those. Generally you’ll find that the more you play it, the less you will even need to think about whether you’re down-picking or up-picking because it becomes natural feeling.
@Serious Questions: Never even thought about that, he could very well be left handed and playing a right handed guitar. Fair Play.
