How do I string a stratocaster guitar with a tremolo bridge?

I know how to pull the strings through the back and tighten them around the tuning knobs. The problem is, when I tighten the strings the bridge comes up and instantly detunes them! I can’t seem to find a way to keep the bridge in place when tightening the strings. Thanks for the help!

When restringing a guitar with a tremolo bar (especially if it’s floating), only change 1 string at a time.

If your tremelo is set up to float, one thing you can do is to slide a pick between the back of the tremolo bridge and the body of the guitar. Then, get all of your strings on and tightened up just to the point of not rattling around on the neck.

Then, it’s a balancing act to tune everything up. You will have to go through tuning all of the strings several times before you get everything in equilibrium.

Personally, I don’t let my tremolo float on my strats. I add the 3rd spring (if it’s not already installed), and then adjust the spring claw forward until the back of the tremolo rests on the face of the guitar.

Sure, you can only lower the pitch on your strings now, but the tuning is a lot more stable. Plus, if you break a string while you’re playing the other 5 don’t go out of tune.
