My fellow guitarists: What do you think of my summer project?

This summer, i’m planning on buying a cheap walmart guitar, and customizing it by changing the pickups, giving it my own paint job, and changing the strings. I know the guitar still wont be very good quality after all of this… but how horrible will it still be?

Oh and any other suggestions for how to customize the guitar are welcome.
I already have a very nice guitar. I’m mainly just doing this for the fun of it. The quality isn’t all that important to me. As long as it ends up in better condition than it was when i bought it.

Go for it, I will give you a few pointers (if you don’t know fully)

Wood – Obviously cheap guitars are made cheap and the wood gives the overall sound, the wood is hardly ever one piece of wood but about 5 or 6 sheets laminated together, this does degrade the quality to a degree and the cheaper it is the more laminated parts and lighter grade wood, this will effect your sound no matter how great the pick-ups but you never know it may make it sound great. But if you are not fussy on the quality like you say and just want a bit of fun, it will be good.

Paint Job – If you are going to change the paint you will have to sand off ALL of the original paint right down to the wood, the best method is to sand it, but if you are not going for a transparent look, you can get a paint burner which will get that paint off in moments but leaves your wood covered in soot, you will then have to sand it smooth and use ‘wet and dry sandpaper’ wet the smooth grade sandpaper to fill in the pours in the wood sealing it for a better stick for the undercoat, for the undercoat you will need to use spray paint and not just any paint but you will need nitrocellulose lacquer which is not cheap and you will need to put on several layers of undercoat on, then you will need to get a very fine sandpaper and give it a very light sand to get away the excess lumps and dust. You will then need to apply your paint which again is nitrocellulose lacquer and again you will need to apply several coats then you willl need to give it a extremely light sanding again and then spray on a varnish to seal everything in, again this will be a nitrocellulose base varnish, then polish off after its dry you will have a perfect shiny guitar body

When spraying the guitar the best method is to saw of a piece of wood and screw it into the screws where the neck should be and then you can spray away without sorry of touching it just clamp it down on to a work bench or something.

Tuning Pegs – more than likely the tuning pegs will suck so its always a good idea to buy some new ones, this is not always the case though, when i worked in a guitar shop everyone used to come in complaining they had crap tuning pegs and to prove the point they would pull down the tremolo bar and it will go out of tune, but because the tremolo bar is not supposed to be used for dives but for light tremolo action it would go out of tune. Also putting the strings on incorrectly will put it out of tune fast.

Pick ups – When installing your new pick-ups its always good to rewire the whole system and shield it with foil to stop buzzing, most cheap guitars are soldered together poorly and will create buzz or/and a bad connection.

Okay that’s it im sorry if you knew all of that but im sure some of it might come in handy
