Best steel string thickness for guitar?

I bought a new guitar its name is dean harley guitar. i don’t like its strings because its painful in the hands and produces bad mute sound when i press chords especially barre chords. help me im changing my strings, what is the right thickness for me, i played my classmate’s guitar when i still dont have a guitar and it sounded really good. but i cant ask him the thickness because its vacation here.
