Blues strings for a semi-hollow body guitar?
OK people tell me what strings work best for you on your semi-hollow body!
When I read the reviews on Guitar Center for electric guitar strings and look for Blues/Jazz strings.
I get ‘these are the best strings ever for my Strat.’, “I sound just like SRV’, etc… Well I don’t play a Strat so this means nothing to me.
Any opinions on DR or D’Addario strings? How about Erin Ball? Lot of bad write ups on Erin Ball saying they are the junk food of strings.
DR strings are really really good strings especially for studio work. The tone and durabiliity are way better than Ernie Ball. Don’t get me wrong, I use Ernie Ball on most of my guitars except that, on my old Les Paul, DR sound better for whatever reason. For semi-hollow, it is irrelevant because you are amplifying the sound. Having said this, I would prefer using DR because of the semi-hollow guitar. This allows the string to vibrate in and out of the guitar, giving a more fuller tone.
I use DR on my old ES-345 for jazz, blues etc…. Ernie ball cannot compete when it comes to anything but solid body guitar. As for saying Ernie Ball is junk food. I used Ernie Balls on my old Strats and some older Gibsons and they sound great although I do not keep them on more than 2 weeks because I burn them. I would classify some guitar players as junk when they do the write-ups. It it YOU that decides how the guitar should sound and play according to your experience. The guitar cannot play by itself. I agree somewhat but for the price, it is still a good buy.
