Bon Jovi has come full circle as the veteran New Jersey outfit gears up to headline the first of three nights of concerts in East Rutherford, N.J., officially opening the new home for the New York Giants and New York Jets. Circle’s first single “We Weren’t Born to Follow” epitomizes this group’s long path to stardom. After 26 years together and 120 million albums sold, these old school rockers have continued to share with audiences their passion for true rock and roll; passion that has enabled hits like the ’80s favorite “Livin’ on a Prayer” to remain a crowd favorite (the tune was fan voted to perform during Bon Jovi’s Grammy performance this year). Much like the track and album itself, Bon Jovi’s work has led to less traveled paths. “The title is about our unity, which is our strength,” Bon Jovi says on the band’s website. “Having had five studio records in this decade, these songs mark a time not only in our life but in our bands.”
The Circle most obviously marked a well-lauded return with the reunion of Richie Sambora, one of the original members and famed guitarist who joined pre-full length debut. “This [album] is meant to be a stadium, turn the guitars back up record and that’s about having Richie back,” Jon continues from the website. The New Jersey group originally formed following Jon Bon Jovi’s underground hit “Runaway,” a tune the frontman recorded at his cousin’s Power Station studio that found Polygram/ Mercury bidding for his efforts in 1983. The eponymous debut was released the next year, followed by 7800 Fahrenheit.
Yet it was Slippery When Wet that really caught the attention of rock fans, as “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “Wanted Dead or Alive” found fans on MTV. The album’s sales totals went to nine million and helped the group maintain a steady stream of international headlining shows. On a roll, Bon Jovi returned with 1988′s New Jersey, a set that sold five million copies, debuted at number one and spawned the hits “Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There for You.”
The group returned following a brief hiatus with Keep the Faith and the greatest hits album Cross Road. The ’90s weren’t as powerful as previous years, though they managed to make a successful comeback with Crush, an album that featured the tunes “It’s My Life” and “Thank You for Loving Me.” The group has continued to remain a prominent mainstream act with the releases of This Left Feels Right, Have a Nice Day, Lost Highway.
