What is a better method for recording guitar?

Would it sound better to directly wire that guitar to the recording system or use microphones and an amp?

I use a Line 6 Toneport UX1 which goes into my laptop via USB. I use Reaper as recording software. The toneport comes with software which allows you to emulate famous guitar styles. In a sense, this is the modern method that you would describe as ‘wiring the guitar to the recording system’.

I’m sure most purists would opt for the second method; using microphones and an amp.
