What scales should a blues/metal guitar master completely?
Any one that’s in the key of the music you’re playing.
Generally, rock and roll will not go into exotic keys like C# or Db minor. So, unlike the classical players, you should be OK with the C G D A E and F, maybe Bb or Eb if you’re playing with saxophonists.
Then you should learn some modal scales and the blues scale:
The modal scales you want are aeloian (sometimes called “natural minor”) and mixolydian. To get the pattern of the aeolian scale, go to a piano and play an octave of all white keys starting on A –the pattern of whole- and half-steps is: whwwhwww. For the mixolydian, start on G and play all the white keys: wwhwwhww. The mixolydian is like a major scale only with the 7th note flattened–it makes leads easier because that major 7th, the “leading tone”, makes it tough to play a descending passage that sounds right sometimes.
The blues scale, on C, would be: C Eb F F# G Bb C. That F# in the middle is what gives that screaming-in-pain character. So learn this one, and those modal scales, in those same keys.
You can, and should, toss in any non-scale notes that make the lead sound right to your ears. Matter of taste.
