guitar lacquer finish

How to go about putting lacquer on my guitar?
I have recentley re-sprayed my squire strat with car paint, and i have some car lacquer to put on. It says to use wet and dry paper wet to sand down the finish before spraying the lacquer, but I’m scared to do this as I have just done the painting! Can i just spray the lacquer on the guitar as it is at the moment?
Hello, Mikey! I am going on the basis that you have sprayed the color coat, and are now finishing the surface with a final clear coat lacquer. The reason for sanding the finish is to remove any imperfections (pits, runs, etc.) that will show through the finished coat. This is done by wet-sanding the surface with a very fine wet/dry paper, usually in successive grades (400, 600, ending with 800). Make sure the paint has dried for at least 3 days before any sanding begins. Once you spray on the final coat(s), you will need to again go through the sanding process, working your way up to 2000 grit! Painting wood is not terribly complicated, but depending on the results desired, there are a number of steps that need to be taken in the proper order. I am not that knowledgeable in the area of painting guitars; however, the folks at Guitar ReRanch are experts, and they have some great advice for preparation and polishing at http://www.reranch.com/101a.htm . Best wishes for success with your project! Best regards, Dana
