Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Tickets- Gates Joins London Cast

The UK version of American Idol, Pop Idol, has given rise to the career of Gareth Gates, who has turned his attention from climbing the charts to performing on stage. He will now get to fulfill a lifelong dream by making his West End debut as Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He will be replacing Lee Mead. Mead won the role of Joseph on the BBC1 reality show called Any Dream Will Do and will be ending his run in January. Gates will not start performing until February, and in the meantime Mead’s understudy, Ricky Rojas, will take the role. The show in London has been running at the Adelphi Theatre wince July of 2007. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat first appeared in London in 1991.

Coincidentally, it was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat that was one of the driving factors to get Gates into music in the first place. He got to play the title role when he was just eight years old in a school production of the show. Around the same time, Gates started singing in the Bradford Cathedral Choir, where he was almost instantly recognized for his talent. He moved up to be the head chorister when he was 11 years old. Two years later, he got the opportunity to sing for the Queen. He was also gaining instrument experience, being classically trained in piano and guitar as well as vocals.

His accomplishments led to a spot at the prestigious Northern College of Music. Gates found his first big break when he was on Pop Idol in 2002. He came in second, but soon inked a deal with BMG, meaning he had to give up his spot at the Northern College of Music. He released a top album and single not long after, selling 3.5 million copies of his record. He followed up the release with a sold-out tour. Throughout his time on Idol, Gates publically struggled with stammering. He overcame the stammering after the show ended and showcased his journey with a television documentary. More recently, he has been part of Dancing On Ice as well as many charity events. Before he takes to role of Joseph, Gates will have to finish up his role as Prince Charming in the London stage production of Cinderella. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been a favorite stage show for decades. The lyrics were done by Tim Rice with the composer and producer being none other than the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber. The story follows the biblical story of Joseph, one of 12 brothers. Joseph is the favorite son and therefore gets betrayed by his brothers out of jealousy and sold as a slave in Egypt. Little do the brothers know they will need his help later. The show brings the hilarious and creative touches of Rice and Lloyd Webber with songs ranging in styles from go-go to country, rock and roll and Caribbean.
