guitar etcetera

Stuck in power chord mode (guitar) Can’t solo need more tehniques. In desperate need of advice.?
Hello, I’m a musician and I really like to play the guitar. I have been playing guitar for about 5 years now and I have improved quite a bit. I never took any guitar classes though, I have been learning all my favorite songs by ear. Now the problem is even though I absolutely master the power chord techniques and palm muting etcetera without any errors, I can’t solo. I do have a lot of feeling however I lack soloiong techniques and other general guitar techniques. To give you an example, I can play november rain by guns and roses flawlessly, that is without the soloing part. It just seems like I’m stuck and just don’t get any farther than playing some punk rock blink 182 (for lack of better example) power chords (flawlessly playing along though). I’m in desperate need of advice. Anyone else went through a phase like this? Thanks ahead. (If you could name me some nice techniques that I should master please notify me)
Why would you want to learn the chromatic scale? It’s every note, that’s it…. *shakes head*
It would be a great benefit to you to learn some scales and enough music theory to know when to use which one. Once you know the patterns you can plot out your melodies and know where your “flourish” notes are.
It would also be good to get a DVD, like the other answerer said. Some people learn differently.
Even with that said, learning theory is very important if you want to be a “real” musician. It’s the basis of how musicians communicate. It’s not easy, but it must be done.
Also important is a lot of practice along to back tracks – learning scales is boring, so having something to play them over is a great thing.
