guitar equalizer settings

are equalizer presets necessary?
i wanted to know whether the equalizer presets that are available in almost all audio players really necessary?
i find it very confusing.
i generally select “full bass & treble” in winamp, i like pink floyd and david gilmore kinda’ guitars.
i feel that all artists already tune the songs for the output of a 0 preset level while recording. so is preset necessary? would preset actually be tweaking the intended song settings?
i know its a matter of taste…but please give me some technical details.
thanks and regards

The most technical answer is that because our listening environments aren’t perfectly uniform (and quite often suck) we have equalization to boost frequencies where needed and cut where they don’t. If you’ve ever heard the term “room mode”, for instance, it’s what happens when a room you’re in emphasizes certain frequencies and cuts others. In instances like that, equalization can help smooth things out and make it sound more even.
EQ can also help a little with inadequacies in a sound system, at least to a certain extent – cutting some low bass to remove the boominess in a cheap home stereo, for instance.
Volume relates to how we perceive sound – at low volumes we want to hear more bass and treble, at higher volumes we don’t need this boosting so much. There’s no way to dial this in automatically, really, so EQ can help us perceive music in a consistent way over many different volume levels.
Oh, yeah, the effect is called the “Fletcher-Munson” effect, I think. Something like that.
