The Xx Tickets – The Xx Brings Minimalist Downbeat Tunes To Center Stage
For the British trio the xx comprised of Oliver Sim, Romy Madley Croft and Jamie Smith, simplicity is key. The three electro-heavy beat-masters have carved their own niche in the music industry thanks to a signature style that features ambient tunes and simple beats, and their stage presence isn’t so different from their music.
Recently headlining an event for Spin Magazine‘s Vans Soundcheck series in Manhattan, the xx showed up for their gig in true minimalist form – donning all-black outfits and showcasing raw tunes. In fact, the band’s synth percussionist Smith even dared to sit the entire performance out, leaving the band to perform as a stripped-down duo featuring only the guitar, bass and vocals. The xx (two thirds of the band, anyway) played a set list of five songs at the recent Vans Soundcheck gig in New York, focusing more on the music than on stage theatrics as band members Croft and Sim covered their bases with xx megahits “Crystalised,” “Islands,” “Shelter,” “VCR” and “Infinity,” the top tunes off their eponymous debut album.
The xx is quickly becoming a hot commodity on the downbeat electronic/indie music scene, and not without warrant. The London-based band has only recently hopped the pond to unleash their signature moody but catchy tunes, and it’s been nothing but overwhelming success in the U.S. and abroad for the alternative trio.
Sim, Croft and Smith began the project known as the xx in London in 2008, when all three band members were still in their teens. Quickly crafting a signature sound that melted R&B beats and a synth-powered undertone with an electro tinge and topping it off with sultry vocals, the xx was an unforgettable band from the very beginning, instantly establishing rapport with the music industry.
In 2009, the xx unleashed its self-titled full-length album to critical acclaim, launching their lead single “Crystalised” onto the mainstream music scene on their way to superstardom. The band’s ambient tunes started to catch wind on the indie scene, and when The xx made its way to the U.S. just months later, the band had officially become an international wonder.
The xx is no stranger to fame these days, and their star is still rising on the international music scene. Most recently, the band’s instrumental song “Intro” was used during the 2010 Winter Olympics during an AT&T commercial featuring Apolo Ohno, and a slew of high-profile concert gigs throughout the year has only helped to propel the band’s stateside career, as well. The xx has announced several tour dates for this spring alongside Hot Chip and JJ, and the band has lined up gigs at several huge music festivals this year, including SXSW, Bonnaroo and Coachella.
Aside from making leaps across the nation over the next few months as part of the summertime touring circuit, the xx also has something else at its feet: a sophomore album. The xx has become a smash hit on the music scene ever since its ’09 release and has left indie lovers with baited breath for a follow-up release, but perhaps one is enough for now. Recently speaking with the Boston Herald about a second full-length album, Croft said, “We’re really keen not to rush it and really take our time with it. It’s quite an open door and it’s something we need to do. I just want to get back to being creative and I know we just want to immerse ourselves in that, really.”
In the lull between albums, music fans can snag the xx tickets from StubHub to one of several concert dates this summer, where the refined trio will be bringing the heat to venues across the nation.
