Learn to Play the Guitar and Have Fun Doing It
Most people want to learn to play the guitar for different reasons. Some want to become musicians and thus, believe that being able to play an instrument will help them in their careers. Others want to study playing since it can be a good hobby. Kids or teens want to learn because they think it’s cool.
One major hindrance to people who want to learn is the perceived difficulty that comes with it. Unlike the piano which will only require you to press the keys and the tune is already made, in a guitar, you make the whole process possible. You hold the strings and you strum or pluck at the same time. You need a good deal of coordination between your hands to be able to accomplish a tune. But guitar-playing only sounds difficult for it is in fact, very doable. It does not matter if you do not come from a family of musicians or you have not studied music in school. What is important is your perseverance to learn.
First step is to find a working guitar. You may ask someone to tune it for you. Next is to find yourself an instructor. If you can enroll in a class, that’s even better. But if you do not have the money to spend, it is perfectly fine. Before you learn to play the guitar, you need to be familiar first with its parts. These include the body, the strings, and the pegs. Next is to acquaint yourself with the six strings. They represent the keys C, D, A, G, B, E. Remember their respective tunes.
Next is to learn the proper way of handling the guitar. For right-handed people, the right hand is used to strum. For the left-handed ones, use a guitar that is designed for left-handed. You must be comfortable while playing so choose a relaxed position. You may do away with the strap if you intend to play sitting.
The basic chords are taught first. If you find it hard to remember what your instructor has taught you, use a guitar book. Find one which demonstrates the positioning of the fingers. This way, you can practice even if the session is over. Play a chord again and again until you get familiar with it. Proceed to the next chord if you already mastered the previous one. After learning three chords, you may start playing them through a song. Ask your instructor to teach you a song that contains the chords you just learned. The transition from one chord to another may be difficult at first. Practice repeatedly so your fingers can move smoothly along the strings.
You may use a pick if you want to. It is advisable to learn to play the guitar by strumming rather than plucking since the latter is more difficult. After perfecting the basic chords, proceed to the more complicated ones. These are the same chords but come with flats or sharps, or in the minor key.
