Guiter cleaner?

I have a bass which is not mine (school loaned) but it could really use some touch-ups…. the fretboard and body of the guitar are kind of dusty and I want to know if it’s okay to use a damp cloth or paper towel? I don’t want to go out and buy fretboard cleaner and all unless necessary, because it just needs some minor cleaning and is not mine. I just want to check with someone because I do not own it and will owe money if I damage it… at the same time I don’t want to go spend tons of money on cleaners for an instrument which I use (frequently) but don’t own.
