What type of electric guitar, we recommend to people …?

Eighth year is graduation week, my father told me he and my mother let me choose my present in a place they found, and that I had when I got squeel. I think it's just an electric guitar, which I was tipsy-pomming at a time. Now, I have little knowledge of electricity, or any guitar for that matter. So what kind guitar do you recommend and why? Because it seems that I am either with a guitar species or cell phone. The styles that I like the guitar parts are alternative, hard rock, rock standard, and metal. I great guitar for country, pop and blues / jazz. I already play the viola, so I have some experience with string instruments, but I know nothing about playing guitar.
