I want to record music onto my MacBook Pro with Garageband? Is the only way with the internal speakers?
I have a cord that connects my guitar straight to my Macbook (a 1/4″ to a 1/8″ cord) but even when I plug it in my Mac just records through the speakers. Is there something I can do to record a cleaner, clearer sound?

No, speakers “can’t hear anything”. Your Macbook is trying to use it’s built-in Microphone which is NOT how you want to do this. So, you have to learn how to use GarageBand FIRST.
Open Garage Band, then click on the Help Tab and click on: “GarageBand Getting Started”. There’s a whole section explaining how to use “Real Instruments” and one on “Connecting Music equipment to your Computer”.
