Pickguard on Acoustic Guitar = Ruin Sound?

I have an acoustic electric guitar with NO pickguard. that’s how it was manufactured. Takamine ean 10c. Now that I have played it for about 5 + years, cedar top around sound hole has been worn down with my pick. I strum 99% of the time. I just ordered some pickguard but will they ruin the guitar’s sound? I am pretty sure it doesn’t but just want to ask the experts out there.
Thanks

I disagree with Cal. Anything that hampers the top from freely vibrating hurts the sound, pickguard included. However it’s a compromise that’s made all the time, especially with guitars that are going to be flatpicked as opposed to played fingerstyle.

My Martin OM has a small pickguard since it’s designed for both flatpicking and fingerstyle but many GA size guitars, which are typically played fingerstyle, especially those with 1 3/4″ necks, have none at all.

That said, it’s a good idea for you to add a pickguard, especially since the top is cedar. Cedar is substantially softer than spruce so the damage you did to the top was pretty much inevitable. I’m frankly surprised that Takamine would sell a dread without a pickguard.
