How does one determine the distance between frets on an acoustic guitar?

I have to do a physics project requiring me to build my own guitar. My knowledge of wood working techniques is minimal at best, and all these amazing looking DIY axes are utterly beyond my ability. I’ve decided to go really simple and use a simple box design.
